Pool Building Process

At Dolphin Pools, we believe that communication is extremely important to customer satisfaction during the various stages of pool construction. That’s why we provided a step-by-step overview of each phase – from the ground up. Just keep in mind every project is a little different however this brief synopsis will provide you an idea of the process and how those blue dots you see when flying in to Phoenix come together. Believe it or not there are over 300,000 pools in the Phoenix metro area.

Meeting your expectations is one of our most important tasks. But like any construction process things can happen, our primary goal is to build you the best pool possible. We accomplish this while ensuring that each stage of your pool’s construction keeps moving forward smoothly as much as is possible through a process that we have continued to refine since 1984. We will work closely with you to coordinate schedules for delivery and work as much as possible however you need to be ready for activities each day throughout the construction phase. The Following is a general phase by phase outline of pool construction:

 

STEP 1: LAYOUT

Before any works starts, we paint the shape of your pool on the ground as a guide for the excavators. You approve the pool’s outline and position prior to scheduling the dig. If any changes are made or requested it WILL delay the construction of your pool, this is why we carefully go over all the details of your pool prior to the layout and why we need to go into and enter the construction phase with all the decisions made.

 

STEP 2: EXCAVATION (A FIRST PAYMENT OF 30% IS DUE AFTER THIS)

Our unique excavation specifications include vertically excavated walls and flat floors. This creates a safer, more enjoyable and spacious swimming pool compared to the industry norm.

 

We use highly experienced excavators to dig your project. Our excavation crews are equipped with the newer trucks and equipment. This equipment, combined with our training and policies, results in crews that work as expediently as possible. The excavation phase usually takes one day to complete.

 

If in the case of a “HARD DIG” you will be notified and excavation will be stopped until a decision is made to move forward. Your pool estimate and contract DOES NOT INCLUDE this potential additional cost. Typically we allow you to pay the excavator directly and avoid any additional mark-up if this comes up.

 

STEP 3: PLUMBING & EQUIPMENT SET

When properly designed and executed, a pool’s hydraulics will ensure years of trouble-free enjoyment with minimal maintenance. Special features standard on our pools include dual main drains for safety, one of the world’s most efficient skimmers, looped returns, and upsized pipe size for efficient water flow.

 

The schedule 40 PVC piping is buried below the top of forms to ensure long-term integrity. Pipes are never heat bended and we use professional pool plumbers with years of experience to ensure low-maintenance, easy to operate, systems that keep your pool clean year after year.

 

Water flow is increased by the size of the pump and by the diameter of the piping. We routinely bid against undersized systems that will not provide enough water for good pool circulation, spa action or water feature needs. Compare these features and you’ll get an idea of what Dolphin Pools has been building for nearly 3 decades. Our ECO-smart pools have advanced features that will save you money, time hassle and frustration day after day all-the-while keeping your pool sparkling clean and ready for a cool dip at a moment’s notice.

 

STEP 4: STEEL REBAR

Steel rebar is placed throughout your pool on a grid, reinforcing the strength of the concrete shell. The vast majority of Arizona pool companies use standardized steel specifications driven with the belief that the least expensive is the best. Our steel specifications are developed and engineered for your pool, in your particular soil, with the unique load and stress of your pool design. At Dolphin Pools our standard pool has 70% more steel in the bond beam than most other pool builders. The bond beam is what helps your pool keep its shape and avoid the flexing and movement that can crack tile and interior finishes.

 

STEP 5: ELECTRICAL

Standard features include a full-size pool with remote-control capabilities. A timer and control panel will be placed with the equipment or on the pool pump itself for daily, effortless pool system control. Many optional lighting and spa control systems are available to meet your budget and needs. If your homes electrical service cannot handle more circuit breakers for your pool equipment you may need a sub panel. Other factors that might affect electrical is your location as some cities require complete electrical calculations from your home or builder. Pools cannot be built underneath power lines or in utility easements.

 

STEP 6: SHOTCRETE (A 30% PAYMENT IS DUE NOW)

We use a special mix of shotcrete that tests to a minimum of 3,000 psi. We use both fly ash AND Fibermesh in our specially formulated shotcrete mix specifications. This mix decreases shrinkage cracks during curing and helps the shotcrete become even stronger in the long run. Our pneumatically placed (shot in place with air pressure) shell is a minimum thickness of 6 inches. In coves and all stress areas, benches and steps it is as much as 12” thick. Our bond beam and other structural load areas will have a minimum thickness of 12 inches. We will never come back to you and ask you to pay for additional shotcrete, known as over break. This can add up to several hundred dollars and many companies will bill you for this after the fact OR stop construction until you agree to pay for it.

 

We have had but a handful of shell failures in the past 28 Years and in each case repaired these pools to like new condition, a testament to our quality standards, rigid specifications and attention to doing what will be best for our customers. Your Dolphin Pool shell is warranted for life should the shell ever develop a crack that leaks water. We provide this extensive warranty because we build pools that last!

 

STEP 7: MASONRY & ROCK

Like all the initial phases of construction, our masonry and rockwork is constructed to last for years with minimal maintenance and engineered with long-term durability in mind. Dolphin Pools rock installers and masons are closer to artists than construction workers. You may have chosen our pool because of our reputation and long history in the valley, however it is the end product that shines above our competitors and the pride we take in what we do. This is much of the reason Dolphin Pools customers come back to us again and again for their projects.

 

STEP 8: DECKING (A 30% PAYMENT IS DUE NOW)

The options are endless; Adobe, travertine, concrete pavers, other stone surfaces, Kool deck, acrylic deck surfaces and colored concrete; if you dream it, we can certainly build and install it. Your pool decking is one of the most visible aspects of your project and you will look at it, see it, walk on it and live on it much of the time. Decking must be well built for durability, heat resistance and chip resistance. It must stay in place, and withstand the movement of the soil it is built on.

 

We have many options for your pool decking and suggest you consider them carefully. Though our decking prices may be slightly higher than some companies keep in mind we use commercial grade concrete with fly-ash and with a minimum strength of 3000 psi may be slightly higher than many of our competitors. But when you compare the thickness, the strength, the footings and the aesthetics, you’ll probably decide, that a extra few hundred dollars is well spent here when it buys many years of practical use and peace of mind. We will never cut corners to get your business.

 

STEP 9: TILE

At this phase the tile you selected for the waterline is installed around the perimeter of the pool. Any raised areas with tile will also be installed. In the event you are getting step edge / marker tile, mosaics or other special tile features these may not be installed the day of your water line tile installation. After the tile is completed a cleanup is usually scheduled and it is at this point that trenches are filled in and leveled, you may also be having a wall or gate put back up, again it is after this phase that the final preparations are completed in order to prepare you project for the interiors finish.

 

NOTE: You will need to have any barriers, automatic sliding or closing doors and gates, enclosures etc completed PRIOR to interior finish or the completion of your pool may be delayed.

 

STEP 10: INTERIOR SURFACES (FINAL 10% DUE PRIOR TO INTERIOR)

The possibilities here are limitless with only your budget being the driving force, Plaster, Ultra Poz, Pebble Tec, Pebble Sheen, Bead Crete, All Tile are just a few of the options you have at Dolphin Pools. Just remember that saving a few dollars up front may cost you much more in the long run. These surfaces must not only resist a wide variety of chemicals, constant attacks from hard water scaling and the sun they also need to stand up to everyday use and abuse, some of these surfaces can do just this better than others. Your Project Consultant/Manager will discuss the features, benefits and costs of each. Whatever your choice, we pledge the highest quality in materials and workmanship. Dolphin Pools has one of the best warranties in the business, be sure to ask about it.

 

STEP 11: START UP AND ORIENTATION

This is the FUN part, now that all those decisions have come to fruition and a sparkling pool is sitting in your backyard just waiting to be jumped in and enjoyed we will schedule and provide a complete start-up, as well as an over view of operation and maintenance. Because, now it is time to start enjoying your new Dolphin Pool.
