Shape Is a Structural Decision, Not Just a Look
Gunite (shotcrete) construction is a steel-reinforced concrete shell sprayed into a hand-formed excavation, which means the pool's shape is built to your exact specifications rather than poured into a manufacturer's fiberglass mold. That flexibility is what makes a fully custom shape possible in the first place — a fiberglass pool can only be as flexible as the molds a manufacturer has already made.

Straight-Edged
Geometric
Rectangles, squares and other straight-edged forms with defined corners. Geometric shapes were the industry standard for most of the 20th century, largely because their simple, repeatable engineering made them the most efficient shape for excavation, steel layout and plaster work.
That efficiency is still an advantage today. A rectangle makes the most usable swimming surface out of a given footprint, which matters on long or narrow Phoenix Valley lots. Straight parallel walls also make lap swimming genuinely practical, and a rectangular pool is the easiest and least expensive shape to fit with a standard safety cover, since custom-cut covers for curved shapes cost more.
Best for: narrow or rectangular lots, lap swimming, modern and contemporary architecture, and homeowners who want a simpler safety-cover fit.
Organic Curves
Freeform
Curved, organic shapes without straight lines, designed to read as a natural body of water rather than a built structure. Freeform pools became widely popular starting in the 1970s as excavation and shotcrete techniques matured enough to make curved walls as structurally sound as straight ones.
The tradeoff is mostly around efficiency rather than durability: a freeform shape typically needs a larger footprint than a rectangle to deliver the same amount of usable swimming surface, and safety covers for freeform pools are custom-cut, which adds cost. In exchange, freeform shapes tend to work better on irregular lots and pair naturally with boulders, waterfalls and desert-style landscaping.
Best for: irregular lots, resort-style backyards, natural desert landscaping, and homeowners prioritizing look over lap-swim efficiency.

Yes, and some custom pools do. Because gunite is built entirely on-site, a design might use mostly straight geometric lines with one curved freeform end. Geometric and freeform are starting references, not rigid categories.
Shape is one of several factors that affect cost, alongside size, depth, features and site conditions. Freeform curves generally require more detailed formwork and custom-fit safety covers than a straight-edged geometric shape of the same size, but the difference is usually smaller than the impact of size or added features.
